The Noise and Vibration Testbed has welcomed a new member to the team – the Elios 3 drone. It is no exaggeration to say that its design is the result of hundreds of millions of years of natural evolution, as it is inspired by the ability of insects to maintain their stability during a collision in flight. This contraption is helping industry by pushing the boundaries of what is possible in mapping complex and confined indoor spaces. In addition to seeing in 4K and its visible spectrum extending into thermal radiation, this drone can navigate perfectly in unfamiliar environments. This is thanks to the fact that it carries a LiDar, or laser scanner.
