Thermal Spraying Applications for Hydropower Plants

We are happy to share a nice example of how a new functional layer for the protection of specific parts of hydroelectric power plants, was carried out in 2023 by our Surface Treatment team. The development was conducted in perfect cooperation with 1.SERVIS-ENERGO, s.r.o.

The new application was immediately implemented at the Dalešice pumped storage power plant. The subject of the development was the application of an insulating layer preventing the passage of electric charge up to a voltage of 5000 V. This application is based on the innovative application of a ceramic layer using atmospheric plasma on exposed surfaces of parts. Specifically, it involves the application of an insulating ceramic layer of Al2Oto the shock absorber rods.

The advantage over the existing solution lies mainly in the prolongation of the service life of this protection and its stability, where the ability of the functional layer to protect the exposed areas is significantly prolonged, without its degradation due to thermal shocks generated during asynchronous start-up of the motor-generator to the pump mode of the turbine. The new technological solution also contributes to simplifying overhauls. This application applies to all hydropower plants operating on a similar principle.
